A medium to large Leccinum associated with Birch.  The cap is initially convex, then flattening; colour is brown but variable, from yellowy-brown to dark brown or olive-brown.  The pores are greyish, often with brown spots.  The stipe is whitish with black to dark brown or grey scales along its whole length.   The flesh doesn't become bluish when cut and bruised, but may redden slightly. 

A dark form is given the name Leccinum melaneum by some authors (ref. Kibby, 2017)

There are similar species with brown caps and dark-scaled stipes; these usually stain blue-green at the base of the stipe when cut and then bruised.  

Photograph a fresh specimen from top down and in side view, and underneath to show pores and full length of stipe.  Note habitat and substrate. Check for staining on cap, pores and stem base when cut and then bruised.
