A large and fleshy fungus with smooth cap; initially convex then flattened; violet-brown to pale greyish-violet. Not hygrophanous (i.e. doesn't become paler as it dries). The gills are violet, browning with age; stem is pale violet, fibrillose, browning with age.  Pleasant flowery smell and pinkish spores. . 

Other blewits, especially Field Blewit Lepista saeva and Sordid Blewit Lepista sordida. L sordida is quite common in VC55; it is more slender, and is hygrophanous.  Some species of Cortinarius and Inocybe also have bluish-violet colouring.
