Wingspan 10 to 15 mm. A small, brightly-coloured species, comprising two forms, with a third in Shetland considered a subspecies.

The nominate form angustana occurs in woodland edges, meadows and similar locations, and feeds on a variety of plants including Plantain and Yarrow. The form fasciella is found on heathland, and feeds on Heather (Calluna).

The flight period is from June to September.

It occurs over much of Britain. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as common.

It appears to be uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland, where there are few records. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
