The cap is reddish brown, drying paler, and has fragmented patches of the white veil at the edges; convex and them flattening as it ages.  The gills start pale brownish, but become purplish brown. Stem whitish, fragile.  Often in dense clumps on deciduous stumps.

Other Psathyella, especially P laevissima which has striate margins and only a few veil remnants.
