A large fungus growing clusters usually at the base of decidiuous trees.  The cap is convex, flattening as it ages, with shallow umbo; dry and orangey-brown to yellow-brown, with a covering of brown triangular upturned scales.   The gills are initially yellow, becoming rusty-brown. The stem has bands of brown scales below the ring; young caps have a fine veil, or cortina.
