St George's Mushroom - Calocybe gambosa

Description

Cap white, often irregularly wavy and sometimes cracking, margin inrolled. Stem quite short and wide. Gills whitish, very numerous and crowded. Has a strong smell of flour or meal.

Habitat

Found in a variety of habitats, sometimes in short grass, or on fairly bare ground beneath trees, even in wooded areas.

When to see it

Said to be found on 23 April, St George's Day, whence it gets its name although often maturing a little later

UK Status

Fairly frequent throughout Britain.

VC55 Status

Fairly common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
