Wingspan 35 to 44 mm.

Inhabits woodland, parks and similar habitats.

The adults fly between May and July, when they can be attracted to light.

The foodplants are Wych Elm and English Elm and the caterpillars are rather distinctive, being marked with longitudinal black and yellow stripes.

Local, but widely distributed throughout much of England, Wales, southern Scotland, it also occurs in Ireland. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as local.

Occasional in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = C (very scarce resident or rare migrant).
