Wingspan 18-22 mm. One of the more distinctive and beautiful members of the Pyralidae.

Around lakes, rivers and ponds

On the wing during July and August.  It flies in the evening and at night, and comes readily to light.

Larvae are aquatic, feeding on Bur-reed and other water plants.

Fairly widespread throughout Britain. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as local.

Fairly frequent but not common in Leicestershire & Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = B (scarce resident or restricted distribution or regular migrant)
