A pale brown coloured species, the wings also have a slight brown shading. Detailed examination of specimens is usually necessary in this group to arrive at a species.

Various habitats, mainly in dampish areas.

Macrocera species are sometimes known as Predatory Fungus Gnats because their larvae are predaceous. They spin a web with droplets of acid fluids, which kill their prey (small invertebrates like springtails).

Widespread and probably fairly frequent in Britain, though not well recorded.

There are few records for Leicestershire and Rutland, but it probably fairly frequent in our area.
