Wingspan 32 to 36 mm. A rather attractive species which does not tend to vary as much as its congeners.

Woodland and well wooded habitats.

Flies in July and August.

The larval foodplants are a range of woodland grasses, including Wood Millet and Wood-rushes.

Locally distributed in the southern half of Britain, but absent further north. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as local.

Fairly frequent but not common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = B (scarce resident or restricted distribution or regular migrant).
