Wingspan 42 to 48 mm. Resembling a pale version of Clouded-bordered Brindle (Apamea crenata) or a darker Light Arches (A. lithoxylaea).

This species flies in June and July.

The early stages are incompletely known, but the larva is said to feed on the roots of grasses.

It is distributed mostly in the southern half of England with a few scattered occurrences further north. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as local.

It appears to be uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland, where there are few records. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
