Description
A blackish species but usually with prominent red spots on the wing cases. There are similar species and care is needed with identification.
Habitat
A species of extensive habitats on damp soils, but it also turns up in patch habitats, especially dung and carrion.
When to see it
All year round, but especially in summer.
UK Status
Widespread in England and Wales but not well recorded.
VC55 Status
Occasional in Leicestershire and Rutland. There were a total of 26 VC55 records for this species up to March 2015.
