Psychoda sigma
Psychoda sigma
Psychodidae or Moth Flies are small true flies (Diptera) with short, hairy bodies and wings giving them a "furry" moth-like appearance. This is a species with whitish wings which are held parallel to each other rather than diverging and with a pronounced black transverse shade.
Also known as Drain Flies because they can swarm around drains where organic matter has not been thoroughly cleaned out.
Spring and summer.
Live and breed in the organic matter trapped inside moist drains.
Records for moth flies (also known as owl flies) are sparse and it is therefore difficult to give precise information about status and distribution.
Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
