Keeled Ramshorn - Planorbis carinatus

Description

The width of shell of this species is 9 to 15 mm. The shell has a noticeable keel at the center of the periphery of the body whorl.

Similar Species

Similar to Planorbis planorbis which has a keel along one side of the shell so that in profile it looks like it has been planed flat.

Habitat

Freshwater ponds, lakes and slow moving streams with muddy bottoms.

When to see it

All year round.

UK Status

Widespread in Britain though less common in the far north and the west.

VC55 Status

Common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
