On the surface, tiny round ostioles can be seen, from which the spores are liberated at maturity. Each ostiole is surrounded by a blackish clypeus, which appears as a stain on the host. A black sphere, up to 0.2mm in diameter, is immersed beneath each clypeus.

This species grows most often on pendulous sedge (Carex pendula).
