It has very short rhizomes and is densely tufted or even tussock forming. It is 10 to 30 cm in height and the upper part of the stem is rough.

Either obtain confirmation from a County Recorder before submitting a record, or submit detailed images showing key features.  We recommend that you take and retain a specimen; the County Recorder may wish to see this for confirmation.

Perennial.

Fairly widespread in Britain.

Confined mainly to Charnwood Forest where it is never abundant. Only very scattered records from elsewhere in our area. In the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire it was found in 15 of the 617 tetrads.
