A small morel with a conical cap, usuall;y dark in colour, and thick pale stem.  As with other Morchella, there is a single hollow in stem and head.  The head is attached to the stem in the upper part only, so the lower part is flared out from the stem, hence the common name.

Other Morchella with a single hollow interior have a head fully attached to the stem.  The Thimble Morel Verpa conica has a completely free head only attached at the top, but the stem is not hollow except at the tip. 

Photograph in habitat; note substrate and any associated plant species.  Ensure your photos show the 'semi-free' head; cutting a specimen vertically through stem and head is helpful.
