Low to short hairless plant with 2 to 7 linear leaves, which are often curled, and are present before the flowers. The flowers are violet blue, 10 to 16 mm in short racemes. The bracts are membranous and longer than the flower stalks.

Widespread around the coasts of western and northern Britain, but only as a garden escape elsewhere.

Probably only found as an escape from cultivation in Leicestershire and Rutland. It was not recorded in the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire.
