Fairly large dark purple or wine-red discs or cups, up to 2cm across, with gelatinous flesh.  This is a sexual (teleomorphic) form, producing ascospores; unlike Ascocoryne sarcoides, there is no known asexual (anamorphic) form of this species. 

The sexual teleomorph of Purple Jellydisc Ascocoryne sarcoides is very similar and spore examination is required to confirm A. cylichnium.
