Wingspan 28 to 35 mm.

Occupies a range of habitats including gardens and waste ground.

The adults fly in August and September, when they can be attracted to sugar as well as to light.

The caterpillars feed on a range of herbaceous plants, including clover and plantain.

The distribution of this moth covers most of Britain. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as common.

Fairly frequent but not common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = B (scarce resident or restricted distribution or regular migrant).
