Wingspan 31 to 36 mm. This species always shows subtle and indistinct markings.

Hedgerows and open woodland mainly on calcareous soils.

The flight period is June and July, and the moth can be attracted to light.

The caterpillar is pale brown marked with darker blotches along the back, and feeds on Traveller's-joy.

Distributed mainly in the southern half of Britain. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as common.

It appears to be uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland, where there are few records. This moth is at the northern edge of its range in our area. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
