This small (3 to 5 mm) beetle is a dull blood red with a darker central area behind the pronotum. Somewhat elongated rather than the typical rounded ladybird shape. 

This species is relatively easy to identify and is unlikely to be confused with anything else. However photos are always helpful to confirm your record.

Associated with rushes and reeds especially bulrush, but by no means restricted to these.

Spring to autumn.

Widespread and locally frequent in Britain.

Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
