Variable Nomad Bee
Variable Nomad Bee - Nomada zonata
Females are very variable but have a black abdomen with yellow spots at the sides, usually marked with red; tergite 1 usually has a red band. Females have two red or yellow scutellar spots, and red yellow or orange markings on the face. Legs are dark red with black femora. A useful field character is the red underside of females - see Steven Falk's Flickr page (link below).
Males are usually yellow and black, and may have scutellar spots, or these may be absent. They have yellow markings on the face.
Nomada marshamella and N. fulvicornis. Males are smaller than N. marshamella and antennal segment 3 is shorter than 5.
Good photographs of a specimen showing details of tergites, face, antennae and tibiae are recommended; it may be necessary for your record to be verified by an expert before submission to NatureSpot.
Until recently only known from the Channel Islands, but it turned up in south-east England in 2016 and is now spreading rapidly northwards and westwards.
