Clepsis peritana
A very small but distinctively marked, brown Tortrix moth with a wingspan of just 10 to 15mm.
This is a rare species in our area, and your record should be supported by good photographs and a note of the size. Please retain the specimen as it may be required by the County Recorder in order to verify the record. Dissection may be necessary to confirm the species.
British records are most likely to be of migrants.
The only British records we are aware of came between June and September, although this species is thought to be multi brooded in its native range.
Associated with various plants including Fragaria (Strawberry), Solanum (Nightshade), Stachys (Hedge-nettle) and Scrophularia (Figwort).
Originally a species from the USA and Canada, it has more recently been spreading through Europe, and was first recorded in Britain in Staffordshire in 2023. There have since been records from Wales, Northamptonshire and Essex as well as this 2026 record from Leicestershire, but it It remains rare to encounter this species in Britain.
Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland. The Sapcote record of 6th June 2026 in the first for VC55.
