A small (1–1.5mm tall), dark (when mature) slime mold with a distinctive flattened top with shiny central disc and black stalk narrowing at the top make this species recognisable in the field. Unlike many other slime molds where the stalk (columella) simply ends inside the spore mass, in E. papillatum the stalk reaches the very top and expands into a distinct, shiny circular disc. The capillitium (the delicate, thread-like network that holds the spores  hangs downwards from that disc, rather than growing outward from the length of the stalk.
