Wingspan about 28 mm. It has a forewing pattern with a dark grey, toothed central band, and dull black outer edge.  It flies in two generations, the first with a more obvious white band, the second being darker with a less obvious white band.

Damp woodland and other damp areas where the larval foodplant Orange Balsam occurs.

First generation fly in May and June, the second generation in July and August.

Larvae feed on Orange Balsam

Mainly found in south and south-east of England and East Anglia.

Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland.
