An evergreen shrub with ovate pointed leaves, usually with yellow blotches.  Berries are bright red.

Forms with unspotted leaves may be mistaken for other evergreen shrubs

Parks and gardens; occasionally self-sows outside cultivated sites

All year round.  Produces purple flowers in April and May,

Widespread records in Britain.

Occasional records in Leicestershire and Rutland.
