3-3.5mm. Flies in the family Ephydridae has a characteristic snouted face. P. coarctata is the commonest fly in the genus and typically found around wetlands. It has a dark green-grey body covered in a short pubescence of yellow hairs. The tip of the scutellum has a prominent tubercle. See ID guidance for more characters.

Adults are on the wing from February.
