A small, black fly with dull orange legs. The head has a semicircular outline with large eyes.

Scenopinus niger

A quality photo is generally required.

The fly is most commonly encountered in houses around windows.

Adults may be found indoors from spring onwards, peaking around June to August.

Larvae of the fly are predators of carpet beetles and other household pests.

Widespread in the southern half of Britain, although it seems to be a decling species.

Uncommon or under-recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland. The Scalford record of 22 April 2019 is the first for our area since 1992.
