A tufted pale green or grey green lichen with ragged flattened branches that broaden from the base. These are often hollow and partly inflated.

There are other very similar species in this genus which means that detailed examination of an actual specimen is generally needed to identify the exact species. A red box around the image indicates that we think it is likely to be this species but can't be 100% certain.

On trunks, rocks and walls.

All year round.

Widespread but local in Britain, much more common in south and south west England and Wales.

Uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland.
