Wingspan 10.5 to 14mm.  Adults resemble other Coleophora species, so genitalia identification is required.

A number of other Coleophora species are similar.

Adult Cased larva

Adult: Determination by genitalia examination (gen. det.) required.

Cased larva - good quality photograph of the cased larva required and a note of the plant on which the larva was feeding.  It may not always be possible to identify from cased larva without rearing.

Associated with Birch and Alder.

Adults on the wing between late May and July or early August.

Larval cased may sometimes be seen as early as June, but more often in September and October.

Quite widespread, but infrequent in Britain. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as Nationally Scarce B
