5-8mm. Females are largely green but colour and the amount of black markings is variable. The species has 2 or more generations and summer specimens are usually greener and often have an anchor-shaped mark on the scutellum. Males are mainly yellow/orange. Identification is difficult and requires examination of the female saw or male penis valves.

The larvae are green with a pale dorsal stripe. They have a pale head and a dark vertical stripe crosses the eye. The larvae feed on willows (Salix sp.)
