The adult is 7-9mm, yellow-orange with black bars across each abdominal tergite. The thorax is largely black and the legs yellow-orange. The larvae are solitary feeders on pine, usually young Scots Pine. Two-tone green with a pale brown head. Some larvae have a dark mask on the face.

Bivoltine; May-June and again in August-October.

Uncommon but increasing in England. This sawfly was restricted to old pine forest in Scotland but in the last decade or so appears to have been colonising England.
