Length 7 to10 mm. Palps brown (contrasting with the pale mouth-edge). Proboscis with the third section shorter than the second section and with the last section shorter than the front tarsus.

Conopid larvae are parasitic, developing inside the abdomens of bees or wasps.

Scattered records through England and the Welsh borders, but not common.
