Wing length 6 to 8.5 mm. The body colour is medium brown the wings are similarly brown tinged when fresh. The legs are predominantly pale brown, the apex sometimes being slightly darker. The top of the thorax has a distinct pair of narrow stripes about the median line, diverging strongly in front around a short median dark stripe.

Preferring calcareous lowland wooded areas, but especially in damp places and near to streams. 

August to October.

Widespread in Britain, but much less common now than in the 1960s and 1970s.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
