Mydaea is a genus characterised by seta on both the dorsal and ventral wings at the radio-cubital node. Very similar to a number of other related species – detailed examination may be needed to identify to species level.

• bristles on the radio-cubital wing node (both dorsal and ventral)
• reddish legs
• black scutellum
• arista hairs > 3rd antennal segment diameter
• pre-alar bristle much longer than the 2nd notopleural
• basicosta + trochanters blackish
• hairs around the base of the 2nd notopleural bristle

Should be examined under a microscope.

Various habitats, especially well vegetated areas.

May to October.

Known to breed in fungi such as Polyporus squamosus.

Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.

Rarely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
