A medium-sized bolete with a brown cap and yellow pores. The cap may have reddish or purplish tones. The stipe is yellow and red, finely red-dotted but without a reticulum.  The whole fruit body immediately stains dark blue when cut or bruised.   

other strongly blueing boletes have a reticulum (net-like pattern) on the stipe. 

Photograph a fresh specimen from top down and in side view, and underneath to show pores and full length of stipe.  Note habitat and substrate. Check for staining on cap and pores when bruised.  We also recommend cutting vertically through cap and stem to show flesh colour and any staining. 

Usually found under deciduous trees, particularly Oak and Beech.

Summer and autumn.

Occasional in Leicestershire and Rutland.
