A large fungus with slimy, greasy golden-yellow caps, covered in orange or brown scales.   Gills are yellow or rust-coloured; stem is pale yellow with brown scales below the ring zone.

Deciduous trees, mainly on the trunks of Beech trees 

June to November.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.

Taxonomy is confusing, and the name 'Pholiota aurivella' may refer to a group of similar species including P cerifera, P limonella and P adiposa.   (ref. Kibby, Vol 3, 2021)
