5-11mm. Metallic green can have a bluish colouration, depending on the light. It is very similar to other Lucilia species and microscopic examination is necessary to identify the species. See ID guidance below.

• black basicosta
• lacks a coxopleural streak in front of the hind spiracle
• occiput with mainly pale hairs behind the post-ocular bristles
• usually 2 pairs of postsutural acrostichal bristles

Lucilia ampullacea is a shade loving species often found in woodland and other well wooded areas.

May to August.

Larvae are presumed to develop primarily in carrion.

Seems to be widespread in England and Wales but true status is difficult to determine due to lack of records.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
