Medium to tall sometimes reaching one metre in height, rather stout, usually hairy plant. Flowers blue but sometimes almost white, 40 to 55 mm long, deep sub-erect or ascending bells borne in leafy racemes. Mid stem leaves have no stalk but taper into the stem.

Woodland, river and stream banks.

Perennial

Widespread but local over much of Britain, but scarce in southern England and Northern Scotland.

Local in Leicestershire and Rutland, but may be frequent in suitable areas. In the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire it was found in 65 of the 617 tetrads
