Description
This orange-bodied cranefly has a pale grey-brown thorax and white band that extends across the full width of the wing. The short ovipositor of the female is also distinctive.

Found in damp grassland, woodland edge and hedgerows.
When to see it
May and June.
Life History
Larvae live in turf.
UK Status
Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.
VC55 Status
Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
