Wingspan 33 to 39 mm. There is some variation in the intensity of the markings of the adults.

Woodland habitats and around Oak and Birch.

Adults are to be found on the wing in May and June.

The caterpillars live during the autumn, eating the foliage of Oak and Birch.

A local species, occurring in the south of England and Wales. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as local.

It appears to be uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland, where there are few records. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
