Short, hairy plant, usually with erect stems. Leaves oblong, usually broadest above the middle, bluntly toothed. Flowers cream or pale yellow with cream upper petals; rarely has any blue or violet. Small 10 to 15 mm, spur short.

Some colour versions of Viola tricolor may be similar, but usually have some blue markings 

Common weed of arable and disturbed land.

Fairly common in England and Wales, becoming scarcer in the north and north-west, and also in Scotland.

Occasional in Leicestershire and Rutland. In the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire it was found in 361 of the 617 tetrads.
