This crane fly usually has a brown banded abdomen.  There is a dark stigma in the wing, but this is quite faint in some individuals, plus some darkening of a few veins. There is a black ring at the lower end of the front femur. Like other members of this family it has a habit of bobbing up and down when resting.

Recorded from various habitats including gardens, woodland and most sheltered areas.

March to October, but particularly in spring.

A common species in Britain.

Common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
