Length about 4.5 mm.  This genus contains three small bugs (<5 mm) which are often found on umbellifers (Apiaceae). They generally have dark antennae. Although external characters are useful, some specimens cannot be reliably identified without dissection. 

Orthops campestris and O. basalis are very similar.  O. kalmii is never green or green-tinged like O. campestris and is more elongate and often more extensively dark-marked. Although very similar to O. basalis, the 3rd antennal segment is slightly shorter.

Unless identified by a recognised expert, a photo is required and the specimen should be examined with a microscope. In the comments box, state the key or ID method used and describe the size and identifying characters.

Most likely to be found visiting umbellifers.

Adults occur all year round but are most likely to be encountered in late spring and summer.

Widespread in Britain, and probably quite frequent, but difficulty of identification means that this species is probably under recorded.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
