Wingspan 15 to17 mm. A shaggy looking moth with raised tufts and various colours of russet, brown and grey.

Mature woodland.

The adult moths are on the wing from July to October, when they can be found resting on tree trunks. They are also attracted to light.

The larva feeds in a rolled leaf of Oak in the spring.

A local species most common in the southern half of England and south Wales. In the Butterfly Conservation’s Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as local.

It appears to be uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland, where there are few records. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
