Wingspan 18 to 22 mm. Quite a distinctive species which shows a wide variation in appearance, with a number of named forms. It has an unusual raised patch of scales, or 'scale-tuft' in the centre of the forewing.

It prefers well wooded areas.

This species flies between August and November, then again from March till May after hibernation.

The larva feeds on a range of rosaceous trees and bushes, including Blackthorn and Hawthorn.

Occurring mainly in southern England where it is fairly frequent but slightly less common elsewhere. In the Butterfly Conservation’s Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as common.

Fairly frequent but not common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = B (scarce resident or restricted distribution or regular migrant).
