Flowers are white, in simple umbels, frequently with bulbils between the flowers, or sometimes completely replacing them. All parts of the plant smell of onions or garlic.

Found in a wide variety of, usually ungrazed, situations such as river-banks, roadsides, field margins, other rough and waste ground, and in woodland. It can be very invasive in disturbed habitats.

A bulbous perennial herb, spreading by means of bulbils.

It is increasingly abundant throughout its range, especially in S. Scotland. Its predominantly eastern distribution contrasts with that of A. triquetrum.

Uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland.
