A large fleshy fungus; cap smooth, initially convex then flattened; cap grey-white to beige or grey brown in colour (never violet).  Gills pale, pinkish.  The stipe is robust, fibrous and flushed with violet on the lower part.  

The Wood Blewit (Lepista nuda) has some violet colour on the cap.

Most plentiful from September to January.

Widespread, occasional (Kibby, Vol.3, 2020)

Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
