Hemp - Cannabis sativa

Description

Tall erect strong smelling herb to 2.5 metres though often less. Leaves alternate, palmate, and lobed to the base into 3 to 9 narrow toothed lobes. Flowers small greenish, the male in much branched clusters, the female in slender stalked spikes.

Life History

Records probably relate to casuals introduced from seeds used in bird food and angling.

UK Status

Occasional records of casuals in Britain, mainly from England south of the Humber.

VC55 Status

Uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland probably occuring as casual plants from bird seed etc. In the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire it was found in 3 of the 617 tetrads.
